This detail illustrates a masonry window head condition with a loose steel lintel angle supporting the brick veneer and an additional pair of loose steel lintel angles carrying the CMU across the opening, adding cost to the wall. (A more cost-effective method is to use a reinforced CMU lintel in place of structural steel.) Continuous insulation offers excellent thermal control. An optional cavity drainage insert above the lintel (not shown) protects the weep vents at the bottom of the cavity from becoming obstructed. The steel lintel is protected with thru-wall flashing returning vertically at each end to form an end dam (not shown). The durable drip edge guards against moisture reentry and may be notched to avoid excessively thick laps. This detail also incorporates a vertical brick expansion joint at the end of the lintel (alternatively located in line with the window jamb).
