This detail shows a concrete masonry (CMU) wall with a 2-course (16″ nominal) deep beam. The beam is formed by knocking out the cross webs of the CMU to accommodate horizontal bars; or by using solid-bottom U-block to accommodate horizontal bars with the bottoms drilled out to accommodate vertical bars. The two courses at the beam are grouted and reinforced horizontally and vertically, and contain stirrups (per design). Horizontal joint reinforcement is placed in the CMU every 16″ on center vertically, or per design. Vertical bars overlap to achieve sufficient development strength per structural design.
